1910年代定期於每月2、7日在光州橋下河灘舉辦的市集，就是現在良洞市場的起源。正如其「濃厚人情味的象徵」之美譽，良洞市場販售各式各樣的商品與美食，甚至因數量之大與種類之豐，被光州人稱為「大方市場」。這裡也是最佳的年貨市場，到如今光州人還會不自覺地脫口說出「要買斑鰩就要去良洞市場」的話。此外，常登上報章媒體的名店「良洞炸全雞」，更是只有在良洞市場才能品嚐到的美味。5•18民主化運動時期，良洞市場和大仁市場是光州市民萬眾一心、發揮大同精神之處。當時商人們免費提供飯團、飲料、藥品等，鼓勵並支援市民軍。

馬岩市場有著超過50年的悠久歷史，是光州北區的代表傳統市場，據說這一帶曾有留下馬蹄痕跡之岩石而得名。相傳早在朝鮮王朝中期時，以無等山為背景活躍的義兵金德齡將軍，有一天彎弓射箭再立刻上馬疾馳，騎速比箭速還快，當時的馬蹄痕跡就這麼留在岩石上。如今馬岩已消失，化為一棟棟建築，而市場則以這些巷弄為中心，漸漸形成規模。2005年，馬岩市場被光州市北區廳列為認證市場，每逢市場開市日，就會吸引來自潭陽、長城、谷城、淳昌等的人潮，是傳統與名聲兼具的市場。市場每逢2、4、7、9日開市。
